Kentucky Fried What?

A California customer's claim that he was served a Deep Fried Rat at a KFC outlet calls for an investigation. How does KFC prepare chicken at its restaurants?

A photo released by KFC's PR firm Emanate shows a closeup of the picture and claims that it is "White meat Chicken" we are looking at, not an unlucky rodent as claimed by the customer. Truth be said, KFC is not in posession of the morsel in question.

NEVADA CHRONICLE    Los Angeles security guard Devorise Dixon says he got more than what he bargained for in his 3 piece chicken tender meal from a local KFC outlet: A full sized, deep fried, breaded rat complete with the colonel's secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices.

KFC was quick to respond in force, saying that their chicken tenders come in different shapes. They point out that Dixon will not allow them to examine the morsel, but they provided a close-up of the picture by Dixon and claim it is really chicken, albeit a rat-shaped one.

Dixon has wasted no time in getting lawyered up, after speaking about his ordeal on a radio show. While they figure their next maneuver, the chicken or whatever it is, is safely preserved in Dixon's freezer.

So now the question for grease loving KFC goers is: How exactly does KFC prepare its chicken, and is it even plausible for a fully breaded rat to meet its end in a deep fryer at KFC?

Chicken preparation at KFC: Breaded chunks of chicken are individually placed on a fryer rack.

Apparently, much of the chicken preparation labor actually occurs in the restauraunt, the old fashioned way. Raw chicken pieces arrive at the restaurant from the slaughter house where they are collectively immersed in a large flour-filled bucket and shaken around numerous times. The chicken pieces are repeatedly taken out, the excess flour is removed and the process is repeated several times.

Once an adequate amount of flour (enriched with the a mystery blend of spices and herbs) is applied, the chicken pieces are carefully placed on a metal rack, one at a time. Once the rack is full, it is immersed in hot oil and deep fried for some time until fully cooked.

Looking at this process closely, it is nearly impossible for a mouse or rat to work its way in the mix. Granted, a restaurant owner has informed me that, in particularly rat-infested neighborhoods, restaurants do have to deal with the horrors of mice and rats working their way into their flour supplies. This is especially an area of concern at restaurants that bake their own bread on site. Rats love flour.

But for an employee to dip a fur-covered rodent into batter and not notice while attempting to immerse the animal in flour repeatedly, and finally placing it on a deep fryer rack like its just another piece of chicken, is a stretch.

What's required here is extreme negligence, on site at a restaurant, for something like this to happen. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but to my knowledge, none of KFC's chicken pieces (breasts, thighs, wings, drumsticks) arrive at the restaurant pre-breaded aside maybe their chicken sandwiches. So are KFC's chicken tenders pre-breaded when they arrive at the restaurant? If not, this is unlikely to have happened at a factory, assuming it happened at all.

This is reminiscent of the occasional syringe-in-a-soda-can rumor that we hear once in a while, or one of my favorites, the severed human finger in the Wendy's chili scam.

Meanwhile, the Vegans laughed mockingly...
